So, here’s how to use a sandwich maker (sandwich toaster) if you’re using it for the first time.
These steps are mentioned based on the popular prestige sandwich maker model. The basic principle of operating the sandwich maker is almost the same, but check your brand-specific guidelines in the manual.
How To Use Sandwich Maker:

- Plug in the wire to the socket. You’ll see a red light turned on.
- Wait for approximately 2 minutes and let the sandwich maker preheat. Leave the sandwich maker ON until you see the green light turning on during this time.
- Now, gently open the sandwich maker (just like you open a closed book), place your sandwich slices inside, and close the sandwich maker.
- If there is a lock on the handle of your sandwich maker, then close it, and you’ll see the green indicator light turning off, indicating that the toasting process has begun inside the sandwich maker.
- Wait till you notice the green light back on – which indicates your sandwich is ready. But if you want, you can still let it be inside the toaster for a few more seconds if you want to let it toast a bit more. But usually, it’s best to open the sandwich maker by this time and take out the sandwich slices.
Pro-Tip: Be careful and avoid directly touching the sandwich maker’s inside heating element/plate (to prevent accidental heat burns on fingers). Use any wooden kitchen tool to smoothly take the sandwich slices off the heating element to the plate. Now, your sandwich is ready to serve.
Note: Some sandwich maker models (like the AGARO Sandwich Maker) have a temperature control feature. Basically, you have to just adjust the temperature using a temperature control knob present on the sandwich maker. Its usage is like you use the knob of a gas stove.
The benefit of using the sandwich maker is you don’t need to turn off the sandwich maker completely after you complete one round of toasting.
The thing is, you can again insert the next sandwich slices inside the sandwich maker and only completely turn off the sandwich maker at the end when you need to.
Can I Use Oil In A Sandwich Maker?
Most modern sandwich makers come with non-stick heating plates. So, in most situations, you can toast the sandwiches even without using oil. However, if you prefer, you can use a little oil, and there’s no problem with it.
To use the oil, you can either apply oil to the sandwich maker heating plates or even apply it on the sandwich. Either way is fine.
Usually, applying oil is helpful when you’re using sticky food items like paneer. You can experiment, see which items stick more often to the plates, and use oil accordingly.
What About Cleaning The Sandwich Maker?
If you’re using it regularly, simply wiping off the sandwich maker’s inside plate (once it cools down) with a cotton cloth is enough to keep it clean and ready for the next toasting session.
However, if you don’t prefer daily cleaning and want to clean it once or twice a month (occasionally), use a slightly wet cloth to clean the stuck food particles. Then, wipe off the heating element surface using a dry cloth to ensure no moisture remains on the plates.
If you find small bread pieces stuck in the crevices and corners of the sandwich maker, you can gently remove those stuck food particles with a soft brush.
